当史比瑞特长大后，他有一天晚上突然在远处看到微弱的火光，他走近后发现那是一堆营火，而他也第一次见到人类，这些牛仔被惊醒后立刻追捕史比瑞特，他被抓以后观众就会听到《宁死不屈》这首歌，它表达了他为了追求自由宁死不屈的精神。

小马王被抓到骑兵队，他在那儿遇到一名上校，他命令手下驯服小马王，但是他却以行动及《放马过来》这首歌表示他对强权的反抗。

上校眼看他的手下无法驯服小马王，于是决定让他不吃不喝，这时骑兵队抓到一名印地安少年小川，这对同病相怜的囚犯靠着对方的帮助，好不容易脱逃出去，小溪也把小马王带回他的印地安部落，而他在那儿遇见了一匹美丽的母马小雨，他们俩立刻坠入爱河。但是好景不长，骑兵队突然攻击小川的部落，小雨身受重伤，小马王也再度落入人类的手中。

小马王失去了小雨之后，顿时觉得万念俱灰，当他孤零零地被赶上火车时，片中响起了《号角响起》这首歌。但最后意识到还有更重要的是要完成，那就是阻止人们把铁轨修建到他的故乡，并通过努力而成功。出于意外小马王再次遇到了小川，就在他们因见到对方而高兴时，骑兵队上校带领手下再次出现，小马王和小川共同逃跑，跑进了一个峡谷，走进了一个绝壁，眼看敌人就要追来，小马王做出了一个惊人决定——飞跃峡谷，为了自己对自由的向往，小马王完成了这惊人的一跃。这时上校也明白了，一颗自由的心永远无法被驯服，于是放走了小马王和小川。

到了分离的时刻了，小川把小雨托付给了小马王，让这两个自然的精灵重获自由，回到属于那个属于小马王的地方。
